Pass in front

Updated: Jun 3, 2023

A well placed pass, makes it so much more enjoyable, and easier for the attacking player to comfortably receive the ball, and land safely. Moreover, it makes it harder for the defender to intercept (and we don’t want to make them look better than they are, by basically giving them ball)!

In order to know where to best place the ball, the passer must be able to read their team mate’s movement, and gauge their speed.

The attacking player also plays a role; they must be confident and definite in their lead, running with their head up, and eyes on the passer, expecting to receive the ball in the space ahead of them.

It's important to note, that in addition to the quality of the pass itself, there must be a connection between the passer and the receiver. It’s team work! It’s the unspoken communication between the two players, in combination with the quality of the pass, that helps build this skill.

Passing into space is a skill, that needs to be practised, and practised, in order for it to be perfected. So, next time you’re training, keep the words “PASS INFRONT” top of mind!

Remember, there must be a connection between the passer and the receiver. It’s team work! It’s the unspoken communication between the two players, in combination with the quality of the pass, that results in a perfectly placed passed.
