🏐 Held Ball, it’s one of the simpler rules, but one of great significance (especially for defenders).
The rulebook states, 'the player with the ball must release the ball within 3 seconds’.
In other words, commencing from when a player takes possession of the ball, they have 3 full seconds to release it, before a sanction is applied.
If you’re umpiring, the key word to note in this rule is the word ‘within’ — you actually blow your whistle for ‘held ball’ ON the third second (presuming you’re starting your count from zero, like on a a stop watch, 0-1, 1-2, 2-3 seconds).
If a ‘held ball’ is called by the umpire, a free pass is then awarded to the opposing team, which is taken from where the infringing player was standing when the infringement occurred. It is a minor infringment, which means the infringing player does not need to stand 'out of play’.
In order to take full advantage of this rule, all players need to get on board defensively. The training focus should be to maintain a strong one-on-one defence for the full three seconds (or more, incase you get an umpire that can’t count). 😉
It may be as cliché as a cliché gets, but defence wins games 🥇 — and that's why ‘held ball' is an important rule for defenders to exploit.
I hope this post helped you gain deeper insight into the rule of ‘held ball’.
